About Scouting

Join the Cub Scouts and have fun while learning!

The Mission

Since its beginning, the Cub Scout program has been a fun and educational experience concerned with values. Besides providing a positive place where boys and girls can enjoy safe, wholesome activities, Cub Scouting focuses on building character, improving physical fitness, teaching practical skills, and developing a spirit of community service.

The Pack

A Cub Scout Pack is made up of Dens, or smaller groups of boys or girls all of the same grade level. The Dens are identified by rank:

  • Lions - Kindergarten

  • Tigers - First Grade

  • Wolves - Second Grade

  • Bears - Third Grade

  • Webelos - Fourth Grade

  • Arrow of Light - Fifth Grade

Although many boys and girls start as Lions, they can join anytime. Dens meet 2-3 times per month as a group to work on projects toward their rank, prepare something for the Pack meeting, work toward earning elective awards, or any other activity they like. They may go on field trips.

Once per month during the year, all the Dens meet together as a Pack. The Cubmaster leads the Pack Meeting, which has been planned and organized with the help of the Pack Committee. The Pack Committee consists of all the Den Leaders, plus other adults who help run things "behind the scenes" for the Pack. Pack meetings often follow a theme and are usually held at Hampton Academy, although sometimes they are held at other locations.

The Pack also organizes activities outside the den and pack meetings, usually about once every 1-2 months. Past activities have included overnights at the Franklin Park Zoo, Plymouth Plantation, the Museum of Science, and the Portland Children's Museum, pack campouts, Pinewood Derby Races, Engine Rocket Launches, Water Bottle Rocket Launches, and community clean-ups, as well as one-day activities such as hiking, bowling, swimming, and fishing. The Daniel Webster Council also sponsors events for all the Packs in the region, such as Scout Day with the Fisher Cats, Scout nights with the Manchester Monarchs, a Zombie Apocalypse Camp-out, and Webelos Woods.

Scouts "graduate" to the next rank level in May at the Cub-O-Matic. They have a rank badge they work to achieve that is specific to each rank. We generally try to help Scouts to finish all the requirements for their rank badges by February when we hold our Blue and Gold Banquet. However, they have until May to finish any awards for their rank. Although each Scout only works on the rank for their age group in a given year, any Scout who has just joined Cub Scouting must first earn a Bobcat award before being awarded their rank for that year.

We have at least one Pack activity each month during the summer.

Details and current positions are detailed in our Pack Leadership Chart.
